Excerpt

That sense of being drawn, of following some glittering thing pulls at her stomach again. Her mind itches with the feel, the need to find…whatever it is. She sets her melange down with a sigh.
She heads for the restrooms, down the drunkenly-uneven staircase, her feet pressed sideways on each narrow tread, around and down. She keeps a hand on the wall for steadiness. The stone under her hand is rough and flaking slightly. She ducks as the steps turn 180 degrees, the ceiling suddenly too low even for her. Old building, she thinks, patting the walls. Solid. She smiles.
At the bottom of the steps, a small space opens and she lifts her head once more. Two doors greet her, green paint peeling, plainly marked with male and female shapes.
The hallway turns past them, and Marika is lured further. The hush in the air, her skin tingling, whisper something important is near. Around the corner is another door, same as the others, labeled ‘Privat.’ It draws Marika.
She wants to run her hands over the door, touch it and know it, while at the same time she wants no part of that door and whatever privacies it encloses. She squints in the dim light eeking around the corner. The door sparkles. Marika looks closer. The door isn’t really glimmering, it’s her eyes seeing sparkles around it, the same way she sees the Death’s Mark – with her second sight.
Her hand raises up, caresses the sill. It tingles her palm with little jolts of shocking pleasure.
A doorway into a realm of magic. Gran told her they existed, but Marika had not believed. This is what drew her. She feels it in the hum of the air around her.

Bio

I'm a fantasy writer-in-progress living in Ohio. I applied to Clarion West for the first time this year (2012), and although I did not get accepted, I met some wonderful people on the forums who did get accepted. I'll be writing this June alongside them in spirit, even if a few thousand miles apart.

Writing Goals

My goal is two-part: First, I want to finish my novella titled "Fireseed."

Second, if I finish before the end of the Write-a-thon (which I hope to do!), I plan to write a short story each week during the remaining time, just as if I were there.

I'll post my progress on my blog.

Fundraising Goals

I'd like to get at least three family/friends and at least two writers/writers-in-progress (like me) to sponsor me for at least a dollar a week. If you're coming from my blog, let me know by commenting there.
