I'd found her in the city's remaining public library this morning, reading some gossip rag printed on gray newsprint with soy ink ("biodegradable ink! aren't we fantastically proactively green as we bring you the bullshit of the week?") She was up on Princess Di's sons' love lives and knew the list of charges brought against that gold-bedecked rap star, but she'd never read Dracula. Or Anne Rice. Or even Twilight ("I'm Team Jacob!" she'd told me. "I like his tee shirt better!") She didn't question why the library's windows were shuttered and secured. I doubt she even noticed.

"Come with me to the hospital," I'd said. She hadn't noticed how desperation amplified my voice. One person a day. I only needed one but goats were increasingly difficult to find. "I know you want to make a donation. Everybody does." She'd giggled and agreed and I'd escorted her to my ragged little Volvo (rust red; how much was red and how much was rust I could no longer tell.)
