Excerpt

“We circle this continent once every year,” the master said. “That is no accident; the Pilots chose our pace. It is a lesson. Every new year’s day, we arrive on the shores where this long walk began, and then begin it anew. We cover the same ground this city has walked for centuries, and we are no nearer to any escape. Yet so long as this walk continues, so our city endures. Thus, even motion without direction can have purpose.”

“But how does it end?” Daen asked.

The master fixed him with a solemn look, which conveyed something almost like approval. “Our ordeal began with the changing of the Times,” he said. “We cannot defy the wrath of the gods, so the choices we have are two. We can surrender, abandon this city and all the history it contains. Or we can wait, for the Times to change again.”

Bio

I have degrees in journalism and political science, and covered local governments in small-town Iowa until attending Clarion West in 2010. Now I live in Seattle and put my schooling to use as an editor and armchair critic. I write stuff, too.

Publications

"Steal the Sky," Bloodchildren: Stories from the Octavia E. Butler Scholars, 2013

Writing Description

I like stuff that is odd, ironic, and a little self-aware. I write big, expansive worlds and silly little asides, and about the only thing that ties them together is, I guess, the fact that I wrote it all.

Writing Goals

This year, I'll be producing the final six episodes of my ten-part animated series, The Adventures of Mr. Stick!!! The first four episodes, originally created for a creative writing class a decade ago, have recently been converted to HD and may be seen on my YouTube page.

Fundraising Goals

I dunno; I'm terrible at this part. Maybe you could pledge $10 for me to complete the 10-episode series? Or, if you donate $15 or more, you can give me one line of dialogue to include in a future episode. (Obvious restrictions apply: Keep it fairly short, because it's an animated video, and keep it PG, because come on.)
