Excerpt:
Igno shoveled another heap of coal onto the grate and shut the firebox door, sending sparks up around the back of the machine. I heard the steam engine inside the large housing speed up and the warm smell of steam crawled over me. The machine would have to build up a head of steam to work, Igno said, maybe an hour, but it was early in the day and the carnival was still getting set up, and even though customers from Mayfield were already drifting through, there was still time. A pair of Confederate boys – barely 16, if that – stood by and read the sign: "Know Your Fate! Never Wrong! One Reb!" Their uniforms still clean and crisp, they had clearly never seen action. One of them made a joke, the other laughed, and they walked away, apparently not interested in knowing.
Bio:
I am a technical writer for hardware products at a software company. My background is in print journalism, but I have written theatre, short films, and spec scripts for feature films and television. Most recently I had a short piece published on AntipodeanSF. In 2000 I founded en theos press, a small press devoted to publishing Pacific Northwest poets. This year I am launching Hydra House, an imprint dedicated to publishing science fiction and fantasy books by Pacific Northwest authors. I am a 2010 graduate of the Clarion West Writers Workshop, and one of the "Gang of Five" who commemorated the occasion with a tattoo.
Publications:
AntipodeanSF, Qarrtsiluni.com.
Writing Description:
Slightly bent science fiction and fantasy, with an oddly humorous undercurrent. Because I can't take things seriously.
Writing Goals:
I will write at least 300 words per day on my novel, Raschor, The End Of Days.
Fundraising Goals:
My goal is to raise $100. As this is my first time doing the Write-a-thon, I believe this will be a big challenge.
