Excerpt

Excerpt from "Fine Flying Things" by Lyn C. A. Gardner, which first appeared in Twisted Cat Tales, Ed. Esther Schrader, 2006.  Copyright held by Lyn C. A. Gardner.

Frankie watched, open-mouthed, as the cats soared up into the sky.

All he could think of was Dali's photograph, that crazy one where the cat flew across a stream of water while Dali perched on a chair.  He ran outside.

In that little space of time, yet more cats had lifted off from earth.  They floated like furry balloons, orange and gray and tiger-striped.  Some looked scared, their claws extended to full panic, like a kitten caught in a tree; but there was nothing to grasp in the sky.  The clouds didn't seem to slow them down.

Bio

With master's degrees in English literature and library science, Lyn C. A. Gardner has edited books and exhibits for The Mariners' Museum, professional journals and newsletters for the Virginia Library and Special Libraries associations, catalog records for Hampton Public Library, and the requisite high school and college literary magazines for Christopher Newport and Old Dominion universities.  A catalog librarian by trade, she wants to classify her cats, but they keep slipping out of the pigeonholes in pursuit of her birds.  Gardner's stories, poems, art, and articles have appeared in venues like Abyss & Apex, Best of the Rest 2, Challenging Destiny, The Doom of Camelot, Horror Garage, Legends of the Pendragon, The Leading Edge, Mythic Delirium, Not One of Us, Strange Horizons, and Talebones, among others.  Two stories and a poem earned honorable mention in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror (12th, 13th, and 15th editions).  Gardner is a 2004 graduate of the Clarion West Writers Workshop.  Visit her on the web at www.gardnercastle.com.

Writing Description

My three-year-old niece sings herself to sleep while her months-old sister screams.  A song in the dark is a wonderful thing, even if no one can hear it but the singer.

Goals

Writing Goals: One completely new draft of a story (can be a new draft of an old story, but the entire draft has to be freshly written) and one new draft of a poem per week.   Bonus (extra credit, optional): If time allows, I will also sketch out the idea for a new story each week, inspired by that week's instructor.  And, in lieu of the weekly reading event, I will look for a literary event to attend or participate in. Please be aware that I'll be out of town and may be unable to post about my progress from approximately July 19-29.  I will still be writing and will post about it as soon as I return.  If I can, I'll find an Internet connection somewhere, but as I won't be the one driving, I can't guarantee that.  What I can guarantee is that I'll be completing my goals that week, as I'll be on vacation and will have plenty of writing time.

I'll post the news on my website, blog, and writing news listserv.
