Excerpt:
There is no such thing as magic or spirits. I won't believe it, and neither should you. I have fought with wolves and black dragons, lost blood on the forest floor in the twilight of battle, with the fat red leaves of autumn raining down. These beasts I've fought alongside, the blue fire that surged within my veins did not really exist. I cover the scars on my arms with my shirt and say that I tumbled my bike down Cameron's creek last summer, and I've repeated that so many times now that the dream of how I got them has faded with the redness. You have no idea how much I prayed for this kind of magic when I was younger, and now that it has been offered to me... But let me begin at the beginning. The day I died.-from "The Wolf Shaman's Apprentice," by Christopher Reynaga
