Excerpt
From my current project, my PhD novel:
Tinder heard the guards long before they reached her cell--the clang of the outer iron doors, their jests about the stench, then footsteps clicking over flagstones. She knew it would happen this way because the baby had revealed it to her in a dream. First the guards would take her to the king’s magician, then they would show her the soldiers. She could see them her mind’s eye-–blank-faced, no longer human.
Bio
I live in Perth, Australia and have enjoyed reading science fiction and fantasy since the age of ten. I began writing fiction about eleven years ago and attended Clarion West in 2008. I also love hiking around misty mountains and walking in the rain, preferably as far away from the equator as I can get. I am currently writing a steampunk fantasy novel as part of my PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Western Australia and hope to visit Seattle again in the not-too-far future, this time without a broken foot.
Publications
I haven't published anything post-Clarion West, but I'm working on it. My most recent print publication was:
"The Bridal Bier" in the Eidolon 1 anthology, ed. Jeremy G Byrne & Jonathan Strahan (2006), which was shortlisted in the Australian Shadows Award for horror and awarded an honorable mention in the Australian Aurealis Award for fantasy.
Writing Description
I write mostly fantasy, sometimes dark and sometimes with a heavy touch of weirdness. At the moment, I'm experimenting with steampunk, putting it in a fantasy setting with Australian influences. In my short stories, I'm also exploring high fantasy and magic realism.
Goals
My writing goal for write-a-thon is to complete 5000 words of my current novel per week for six weeks.
I would like to raise at least $100 during the write-a-thon. For every dollar donated to me for Clarion West, I will use my own money to match it and donate it to Clarion South in Brisbane, Australia (up to the value of AUD$100).
